Novelda Visit - October 16th 2025

Last Thursday we enjoyed a lovely day out with U3A to the town of Novelda (not far from Elche) in Alicante. The first part of our day took in the beautiful home created by the visionary Antonia Navarro Mira. The house took 5 years to build from 1900 - 1905 and it was for her and her two daughters, one of them was married in the little chapel incorporated in the house. We were allowed to take very few photos. A small selection here. The ground floor of the property featured all original furniture which was very art deco. Floors and ceilings were stunning, as was the marble staircase with balustrade made just to fit the hand of the lady herself. On the first floor and second were some nice items but not from the house. Apparently during the civil war the house was occupied by troops who burned the furniture

there is a ballroom on the first floor with amazing floor tiles and the most most fabulous painted ceiling....must have taken the artist/s years to complete. In addition this house was unique in that it had electricity and running water....even an ensuite bathroom!! Nothing anybody else would have had at that time. After visiting the house we headed for Alicante city and enjoyed a meal in the sun and a nice walk around the town, checking out the toadstools which have become a tourist attraction. A couple of mocktails/cocktails before departing for home. A really lovely day with sunshine and lovely company.
